Quick Water Heater Repair

A water heater that is in need of water heater repair can quickly go from a minor annoyance to a major problem in a very short amount of time. Not only does a water heater in need of water heater repair waste water and money, but the leaking water can also quickly cause water damage and mold. If your water heater is in need of water heater repair, act quickly. Here are the four steps you should take.

Water Heater Repair Tips

1. Find the Leak

Start by determining the location of the leak. Is the water coming from the inlet or outlet or from the drain valve? Is it coming from the tank itself or from the pipe that runs off of the tank? Is the leak coming from a separate appliance altogether, or is it just condensation? Finding the cause will help you identify which repair needs to be made.

2. Turn Off the Power

Once you have found the leak, turn off the power to your water heater before you attempt any water heater repair. If your water heater is electric, simply unplug it. If it is gas, flip the on/off switch or turn the knob. Avoid the main gas shut-off valve, if possible.

3. Turn Off the Water

Next, turn off the water before attempting any water heater repair so you don’t accidentally end up flooding the room. There should be a shut-off valve located next to the water heater. If you cannot find or access it, shut off the water from your house’s main water shut off valve.

4. Fix the Leak

Once you have found the leak and shut the water heater off, either fix the leak yourself or have a plumber come out to fix it. The solution may be as simple as replacing a part or as complicated as replacing the entire unit. If you do not feel comfortable performing water heater repair yourself, don’t be afraid to call the professionals.
